“We can offer Relief for Airbnb Hosts: A New Solution to Ease Airbnb-Related Challenges in New York City and other Cities.” - Stormin Normans REI LLC Founder/Owner Norm Descoteaux
The Truth About Airbnb Investments:
One host openly shared, "My assets are tied up in my house, and I have limited cash flow. Occasionally Airbnb-ing my home has been essential for making my mortgage payments." In public, hosts portrayed Airbnb as a form of public assistance or a much-needed second source of income. However, in private forums, the tension between the platform and its third-party contractors became more apparent. They had fought for Airbnb, and they were left wondering why Airbnb wasn't fighting for them.
Unlike other gig-economy startups like Uber, Airbnb hosts, often dubbed as short-term landlords, had become steadfast political allies. During a lengthy seven-hour public meeting in January, hundreds of hosts criticized the Office of Special Enforcement for seemingly abandoning "working-class New Yorkers" who relied on the extra income from Airbnb to meet their mortgage payments. Their arguments closely echoed Airbnb's own campaign against the regulations. Hosts pointed to rising taxes and utility bills, portraying their Airbnb listings as economic engines for the city. They argued that Airbnb attracted tourism dollars to their neighborhoods and provided vital financial support to local businesses.
New York City's Airbnb hosts faced a challenging summer. Conversations within private forums hinted at their uncertainty. One host expressed frustration, saying, "I talked to Airbnb support, and they don't know how to go about this." Another host cautioned, "Be careful; after 30 days, guests become tenants, making it hard to remove them." After a prolonged period of legal uncertainty, the city was preparing to enforce new regulations. These rules, in theory, aimed to remove thousands of rentals from the platform. Hosts were now required to register their properties through a novel licensing system and could only rent apartments for more than 30 days if they were present alongside their guests.
